As India's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh combines a massive agricultural base with well-known MSME clusters — leather in Kanpur, brassware in Moradabad — and the fast-growing Noida-Greater Noida IT and industrial corridor bordering Delhi. Any author, publisher, or software company in Uttar Pradesh producing original work benefits from registering it before disputes over ownership arise.
StartRight4U supports Uttar Pradesh-based authors, artists, and software companies through the full registration process, including responding to Registry queries.
What Is Copyright Registration?
Copyright, under the Copyright Act, 1957, is the automatic legal protection given to original literary, artistic, musical, and dramatic works, plus software and cinematographic works, the moment they're created in a tangible form. Registration isn't what creates the right — it exists from creation — but a Certificate of Registration is prima facie evidence of ownership, making it far easier to enforce the right and prove infringement in court.
What Can Be Registered
- Literary works: books, articles, software source code, and other written content
- Artistic works: paintings, logos, photographs, and graphic designs
- Musical works: compositions, including the notation itself (separate from sound recordings)
- Dramatic and cinematographic works: scripts, choreography, and films
- Sound recordings: registered separately from the underlying musical or literary work
Documents Required for Copyright Registration
- Copies of the work being registered (manuscript, source code, artwork, or recording, as applicable)
- Details of the author and the applicant, if different from the author
- A No Objection Certificate, where the work was created for another party (e.g., work-for-hire situations) or involves a publisher
- Power of attorney, if filed through an authorised agent
- Statement of particulars covering the nature, title, and date of the work's first publication or creation
Step-by-Step Copyright Registration Process
- Prepare the work and supporting documentation, including author/applicant details
- File the application with the Copyright Office, along with the prescribed statement of particulars
- The application enters a mandatory 30-day waiting period during which objections can be filed
- If no objection is raised, the application moves to scrutiny by the Copyright Office examiners
- Respond to any discrepancies raised during examination
- Receive the Certificate of Registration once the Registrar is satisfied
